DB Normalization & Functional Dependency
Objectives:
- Students will understand and apply the principles of normalization in database design,
- achieving up to 3NF (Third Normal Form) and BCNF (Boyce-Codd Normal Form) as needed.
- Understand the concept of functional dependencies in databases.
- Identify functional dependencies in relational schemas.
- Apply the concept of FD to normalize relational databases.
-
The main objective of the lesson is to familiarize students with the fundamental concepts and principles of database normalization. This includes:-
- understanding why normalization is essential in database design, l
- earning about different normal forms (1NF, 2NF, 3NF, etc.),
- and recognizing how normalization helps eliminate redundancy and improve data integrity in relational databases.
- By the end of the pre-class lesson, students should be able to identify unnormalized data and describe the steps needed to normalize a database schema effectively.
