Course Tittle: Occupational Health and Safety
Course Description
This course deals with the sociology of work, profession and industry, division of labor and analysis of professions from a sociological perspective, understanding work and professions from the perspective of politics and power, labor market relations with vocational and technical education and training institutions, application of sociological perspectives in understanding work and life’s career, study of sociological institutions related to work and profession, and the interaction of these institutions with other sociological processes and phenomena. It also focuses on providing students with theoretical and empirical knowledge about the analytical skills of work and the profession as a sociological institution and a social process. The concepts include: society and sociology, work and profession as a sociological institution and social process, the sociological theories in understanding work and profession, power and politics in the division of labor, justice and equality in work and professions.
Course offerings and format
- This course is offered for multidisciplinary specialty; however, some contents will be modified according to specialty.
- The course will include:
- Theoretical part
- The lab includes simulation including clinical field visits.
- Credit Hours: 3 credit hours (2 credit hours for the Theoretical part and 1 credit hour for Lab {2 contact hours/week}, including workplace visits)
- The course will be University Elective. The students will be able to register for this course after finishing 60% of the total credit hours of their study.
- The course will not be offered in the summer course.
Importance of course
Occupational Health and Safety course is designed to create an understanding of a safe, healthy work environment.
The importance of this course comes from its concern with two separate main parts:
- Occupational Safety covers the risk factors in the workplace and the potential safety hazards that might cause injury.
- Occupational Health focuses on the potential health concerns and well-being, including the safety of the employee’s physical well-being, as well as mental health.
Course Levels
Level of the course: this course will be offered to students from different multidisciplinary backgrounds, and after finishing 60% of the total credit hours of their study.
The following modules are designed to match the topics that will be covered in each week of the course, as well as, these topics are arranged in consequence to be understood by students in their third and fourth academic levels.
Course Organization
The Occupational Health and Safety course focuses on the health and safety of people in their workplace. This course is organized to allow learners to be familiar with different work situations based on learner’s specialty.
The learners will be equipped with the essential knowledge and training that enable them to practice the profession safely.
A variety of teaching methods will be used to ensure that the learners have gained the optimal amount of knowledge, as well as using different training methods that influence the accuracy of practicing.
Moreover, different evaluation strategies will be used based on participatory teaching methods.
Intended learning outcomes (ILOS) (in general)
1. Familiarization with Hazard, Risk, Safe, Accident, and Dangerous occurrence.
2. Recognize the importance of health and safety, what work-related accidents are, and why they occur.
3. Identify the range of health and safety hazards and the harm they can do.
4. Utilize the importance of safety signs and their usage.
5. Employ reporting for potential health and safety hazards.
6. Assess the risk measures that can be carried out.
7. Demonstrate the appropriate measures to prevent or reduce the risk of occupational hazards.
8. Engage with teamwork to practice the different roles and functions of the occupational health and safety professional/s within the conceptual framework.
9. Maintain self-confidence to reduce the level of stress that will decrease the incidence of work-related hazards.

Course policy
1. Communications: If you have questions or enquiries, you can come to the professor's office during office hours. Also, students can contact the lecturer by email.
2. Attendance: Attendance is mandatory, 10% of absences are acceptable and excused - no reasons, no excuses, and no warnings are necessary.
3. Exam: Adhere to the university’s instructions regarding exams (attendance or absence).
4. Appointments and projects: Active participation in Appointments and projects and their timely delivery.
5. Cheating or plagiarism: Any attempt to cheat or plagiarism of any kind will lead to failure in the course.
6. University instructions: The student must comply with the university’s regulations and instructions
